When Marilyn was made a member of the Order of Canada in 2002 she received hundreds of letters congratulating her and thanking her for the profound influence she had on people's lives. The following letter is from Tyrone Patterson, Artistic Director of Opera Lyra in Ottawa and a former high school student of Marilyn's.

Ty Patterson's Letter

Dear Marilyn,

Congratulations on receiving the Order of Canada. Living in Ottawa, I have become more aware of the significance of this very prestigious award. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this honour than you, Marilyn.

Frequently I think back to the voice coachings you so kindly gave me and I often wish I had continued with singing but it was not meant to be. I remember with great embarrassment the first opportunity I had to conduct the Scarboro United Choir. You had another commitment and let me run the rehearsal. I was studying at university at the time and thought I had pretty much figured out all I needed to know. Following that rehearsal, I was horrified to discover how difficult it was to lead an effective rehearsal and realized that it took great skill to run a rehearsal as easily as you do. It was an invaluable lesson.

I can tell you that your unfailing encouragement played a big part in helping me choose my career path. Who would have predicted that some big kid who loved sports and "hung-out" with a rough crowd would end up as General Director of the opera company in the nation's capital with a conducting career that is literally taking him all across the world? It may seem like a small thing, but I believe the fact that my choir teacher also drove the bus for my football team made a lasting impression, demonstrating it was acceptable to like both sports and music. In fact, there probably haven't been too many university students who were awarded both a sports bursary and a choral music bursary!

Once again, Marilyn, I sincerely congratulate you and I wish I hade been able to be in Calgary for the celebration.

Yours truly,

Ty
